What
is a database?
Simply stated, a database is an organized body of
information.
What are the benefits of using databases?
· Provides access to the *Invisible Web, or information
which is still under copyright protection and ONLY available through
paid subscription databases.
· Allows the user access to books, articles,
encyclopedias and other information from school or at home.
· Provides high-quality and reliable information.
· Makes searching more manageable.
· Provides the user with more relevant results.
Why not just Google instead?
Good Question! Many students mistakenly confuse search engines with
databases. However, they are NOT the same thing.
Google is a search engine, which means that it is unable to search a
large portion of the Internet commonly referred to as the *Invisible
Web, or deep web, which is accessible only through database portals.
*The Invisible Web is a term referring to information on the web that
is not indexed by the search engines. It was coined in 1994 by Dr.
Jill Ellsworth.
Database Search Tips:
· Try to come up with alternative key words, terms or
phrases. For instance, an alternative word for “dog” is “canine,” and
another term that could be substituted for “global warming” might be
“climate change,” etc...
