The Language
Arts/Literacy Curriculum in grades 6 - 8 incorporates the five
standards (reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing) that are
within strands of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for
Language Arts Literacy. In addition, critical thinking is prevalent
throughout the curriculum. To embrace the areas of focus within each
strand, the curriculum is set up in units of study with specific
reading and writing skills/strategies at the center of each unit.
The units of study are supported with the newly adopted
McDougal Littell Literature series. Within this series are numerous
resources to meet the middle school needs of all of our readers and
writers. Technology is embedded in this series in many ways from
student accessibility through the Internet to students highlighting
and writing notes on the computer as they read.
To ensure that the curriculum remains a living
document, middle school language arts literacy teachers use a software
program, Curriculum MapperŪ, to complete monthly maps, at the end of
each month, that specify the skills and strategies taught during that
month. Maps are reviewed to make sure the curriculum supports the
needs of all students while providing students with the necessary
skills and strategies to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers
throughout their middle school years.

Content Standards, visit

To activate the online version of the pupil edition of
the McDougal Littell Literature series, visit: http://www.classzone.com
. Please note that the language arts literacy teachers give students
an activation code in order to set up their own access into their
grade-level pupil edition. Sixth grade students have already come into
the technology lab and set up their online book accounts. |
